Looking for refuge in the storm

Are you tired? I am. Are you weary? I am. Do you need a place of refuge in the storm? Life gets hard, really hard and we all need a place to go where we can just rest. A place that hides us from the world and it’s problems, a place where we can refresh and recharge and get ready to face life again. My favorite place for that is the beach and I don’t care what beach, just a beach! I do enjoy San Diego a lot, and Coronado Island and Silver Strand Beach has been a favorite in the past. But basically if it has water, sand, sun and surf I’m good! The problem is I don’t get to the beach enough. I would live there if I could, but real life doesn’t allow that luxury.

Sometimes the only place I can go to get away is my bedroom, after the kids are asleep!  It’s not glamorous, but it’s reality.  Quiet time in my house is rare, between the kids and the dogs there is always noise of some sort.  But we all need a place to hide.  God provides us with that.  God gives us a shelter when the world is chaotic.  When all is falling apart God gives us a refuge.

Psalm 91, gives us that refuge.

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High

    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.[a]
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”

Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
    and see the punishment of the wicked.

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
    and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
    no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

14 “Because he[b] loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.

Did you read that? Did you see that?  Can I break it down for you?

Verse 1 ” Whoever dwells in the place of the most high” whoever means you! It means me, it means anyone that wants to seek refuge in God.  It is all inclusive and He will give us all rest!  Don’t we all need rest in this day and age?  I know I do!  From verse 2 on the Psalmist tells us what God will do for us as he is providing us with rest and shelter.  He will save us, He will cover us.  We will not fear, and the things that destroy the world around us will not harm or destroy us.  He will command His angels to guard us!   I love that verse, I have assigned angels looking out for me.  Do you see the ways they protect you?  I do!

Verse 14 tells us that because He loves me the Lord will rescue you!  We can call on Him and He will answer us and He will deliver and protect us and give us long life!  Isn’t that what we need today? Protection, Salvation and Deliverance!  All of these things God will give us if we dwell in Him, and allow Him to be our shelter and refuge.  I always read verse 4 and picture these great big angels surrounding us with their wings and holding me close in such a protective way.  There are days when that visual image gets me through.  It keeps me grounded knowing that God Almighty is protecting me and holding me close!  What a comfort and what a refuge we have in God.

Next time you’re at the beach look for me here!!
